Kid friendly, Language Rich Experiences in Atlanta

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again and again, hands on experiences are the BEST to get the language to “stick”!

So, I’ve come up with some awesome places in and around the Atlanta, GA area to take your kids! Check it out!

  1. The library! Search for your local branch here. There are planned, kid friendly events such a storytime, or you can just spend some time on a rainy day exploring books :)

  2. Zoo Atlanta. Duh. So many animals to see and learn about. Hot tip- preview the exhibits on their youtube channels, or if you can’t make the trip; do a virtual zoo visit instead!

  3. Children’s Museum of Atlanta- This is a nonprofit organization that promotes “creating opportunities for children to learn through the power of play”. I couldn’t have said it better myself! They have hands on activities for kids as young as 10 months.

  4. Interactive Neighborhood for kids - Gainesville, GA. While not in Metro Atlanta, I think this is worth the trip!! Your child can experience all the pretend play in a mock neighborhood. How more hands on can you get?!

  5. The Kids Avenue - This place is pretty new! Another pretend city playground, but right here in Buckhead, it’s so cute!

  6. Dunwoody Nature Center- What a great way to get outdoors and make learning fun. They have registration for Mommy and Me classes coming up soon!

  7. TinyDoors ATL- This one can be great for older children or those with an interest in art. Take an adventure through the neighborhoods of Atlanta. First, you can read the book and download a free lesson plan! Follow the map to find tiny doors in Atlantic Station, Midtown, Little Five Points, Inman Park, and more. What a fun way to incorporate following directions on this scavenger hunt.

  8. LegoLand- A child builder’s dream!

  9. Georgia Aquarium- An Atlanta staple that is great every time! Just like the zoo, this is a great one to preview exhibits before or do a virtual field trip. They have live webcams of the exhibits!

  10. Sloomoo exhibit- The ultimate sensory experience to work on the basic concept “slimy” :)

Keep these language skills in mind when you go :)

  • identifying/labeling vocabulary

  • sequencing and following directions

  • object/function

  • basic concepts

  • categories

  • requesting

  • action words

  • compare/contrast

Already planning a trip?? Tell your SLP beforehand. They can help you prepare some visuals or language targets!
